===== Layman Installation =====

1.  If you have not already done so, emerge layman

  # emerge -uND layman

2.  If needed, add a proxy for layman

  # nano /etc/layman/layman.cfg

  proxy : http://proxy.yourserver.com:8080  
  nocheck : yes 

3.  Setup the portage overlay variable.  We don't want layman editing our /etc/make.conf, so we use a layman make.conf

  # echo "source /usr/portage/local/layman/make.conf" >> /etc/make.conf
  # echo 'PORTDIR_OVERLAY=""' > /usr/portage/local/layman/make.conf

===== Subversion Installation =====

Subversion is the tool layman uses to retrieve the novell apps

  # emerge -uND subversion

If needed, add a proxy for subversion

edit subversion server config to enable our proxy

  # nano ~/.subversion/servers

add

  [[:global]]
  http-proxy-exceptions = *.exception.com, www.internal-site.org

  http-proxy-host = proxy.landcareresearch.co.nz

  http-proxy-port = 8080

  # http-proxy-username = defaultusername

  # http-proxy-password = defaultpassword

  http-compression = no

  # No http-timeout, so just use the builtin default.

  # No neon-debug-mask, so neon debugging is disabled.

  # ssl-authority-files = /path/to/CAcert.pem;/path/to/CAcert2.pem


  note:  make sure there are no spaces at the start of any of the lines in the section you just added or subversion will complain.

===== Updating layman =====

5. get the layman package list

 # layman -f

6. list what we have

 # layman -L

From time to time you can update the overlay :

 # layman --sync <name>

You can also chose to update all your selected overlays with:

 # layman -S
